Economic Analysis of the Effect of Climate Change on Cocoyam Production in Nsukka LGA of Enugu, Nigeria

The Research was carried out in 3 communities located in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State. It was based on the following objectives:

i. describe the socio-economic characteristics of cocoyam farmer in the area,

ii. describe the nature of climate change impact on cocoyam,

iii. describe the adaptation methods employed by the people to cope with climate change effects  the crop,

iv. ascertain the extent of climate change effect on cocoyam output in the area,

v. determine the factors affecting the adoption of different adaptation practices by the farmers,

vi. determine the effect of climate change on the market price of cocoyam in the area and

vii. make recommendations based on the findings

Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, linear, semi log and double log regression methods. Students' T' test and Chow's Test of significance were also used.

The result shows Climate Change had a significant effect on cocoyam production. A Significant drop in output and a tremendous hike in market price of cocoyam was observed across 2007/2008/2009.

The study recommended a need for policy review to combat climate change among other things.

Inner Conflict due to Pretence

This conflict is destructive yet easily avoidable.

It is the conflict you have with yourself. This occurs when the person inside is in conflict with the person you are on the outside.

It consequently drains your energy and damages your credibility.
However, you can get rid of this cog in the wheel of your freedom by following the underlisted:

- Be completely honest about who you are.
- Drop the pretence and you will realise a heavy burden has been laid off you.
- Stop pretending because even if you could manage to be convincing at times, 
   you would gain nothing of real value.
- The real value lives in your authentic person; in your sincere and deeply felt passions you will 
   find life’s most delightful and fulfilling moments.

In conclusion, expel that inner conflict due to pretence and allow your through self fulfil the wonderful possibilities that are uniquely yours.

Your Good Will Return To You

I woke up with a smiling face this morning. The first person that sent me a facebook message was Chidiegwu (we call him Chidi). The message made the whole scenario more interesting and worth telling to my friends here.

Few minutes before I woke up I decided to branch into an old friend’s room, it’s over 5 years since we saw each other. Fortunately, he was inside and asked me to come in and immediately I entered he jumped from his bed to embrace me. We discussed about past and present life in about 30 minutes I pleaded to go home since I was just coming from the evening mass. We made for the door and as he opened the door behold his dad just drove into the compound, I barely knew his dad if not that he quickly whispered to me. However, Chidi once told me that his dad works as a custom officer so couldn’t wait for me the day he came to UNN because of his schedule at Portharcourt same day. I quickly composed myself, greeted him and he replied. Chidi now told his dad that this is the Dennis that helped him during our school days. His dad was so happy to meet me and asked about me and gave me a good amount of money to cover most of master’s program expenses. I was dumbfounded at first but later thanked him so much. I reached my house and fell on my knees and expressed my sincere gratitude to God. It was at this point I woke up still smiling.

I quickly “whatsapped” a friend in Nigeria that I woke up smiling and that someone will soon favour me. She compelled me to narrate my previous connection with Chidi after I tipped her as above.

I and Chidi were 2^nd year students then. He was in the department of mechanical engineering and I was in Agricultural Economics department. We were “room mates” in Mbanefo Hostel, UNN. Chidi was seriously hit by fever and the day was like every other busy day so, other “room mates” hurried to their lecture rooms but I resolved to miss my lectures and stay with Chidi. Bought him food and medicine then forced him to take them. I had to force him because Chidi didn’t believe in taking medicine for his health to be intact but would rather prefer prayers and fasting. I took some time to talk him into taking the food and medicine I bought for him. I called his parents to inform them about his health. Thank God Chidi became stronger the next day. I guess his faith was really good. Nevertheless, I had missed my lectures that day and Prof. Igwe’s Soil Science quiz but helping a friend to get better was more important for me at that time. I have known that the human life is more important than pen and paper because I can cover up for test or lectures missed  but not for the loss of single human life anywhere. My room mates  who thought I assisted Chidi for immediate gain were astonished that I didn’t come to meet Chidi’s dad when he came to the school. I didn’t meet him because I had to update my notes in the School library. (Nnamdi Azikiwe Library). For five years I lost contact with Chidi and his dad until today Sunday 19^th October, 2014 that woke up smiling and praising God for his numerous blessings for a little good act done around 2007/08. Chidi actually told me in the facebook message that his dad was really asking after me.

In conclusion,

-          never hesitate to do good anytime you find an opportunity to do so.

-          When you do good, do not consider your immediate gain. In other words, what you will get should not determine whether you will do good or not because there is always reward for good deeds.

-          The reward may be material or non-material. For instance, you may either get unexpectedly financial support for your project (material) or be delivered from accident (on land, water or air). Just know that your good will return to you.
